Moving questions

So, as you know, we're moving on the 17th (omgomgomg so close omgomgomg). We're thinking about, rather than olanning on having enough people with car/truck space make half a dozen trips each, instead renting a U-Haul. This will definitely help with the big stuff (like the half a dozen bookcases, for instance). The problem? Neither of us feels particularly comfortable driving such a big thing. (I mean, for crying out loud, I learned to drive on Daisy, may she rest in peace, and she was a little-bitty Ford Escort!) Would someone possibly be willing to help us out by driving the thing? It's not very far at all (10 minutes from our current place, tops), and there would be reimbursment, of course, on top of the pizza we're already giving everyone who helps with the loading/unloading fun.

Also, is it worth it to rent the dollies and furniture pads? Quite honestly, every time I've moved before this was with my family and professional military movers, or stuffing stuff in trash bags and driving between my mom's place and the dorms, so I'm a bit lost here.

So, um, help?

Can't drive it from here, but...
You might be surprised at just how much a person't U-haul-driving skills come online when fed by raw necessity. For example, U-hauls have been the only thing I've ever successfully driven that are larger than an econo-box, and it worked both for the Portland-Berkeley trip and the Berkeley-Northridge trip (the latter of which was even with my car in tow, and across the San Gabriel Mts.). So... it can work, even if you're scared witless about it.

Hope this helps!
